This is the cleanest solution for me, I didn’t need to have an intermediary on my desk just to connect to the monitor. I just leave it to connect with HDMI 144Hz. Windows gave all kinds of weird display issues, black screens, etc. Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 via Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express dock: Xiami 34” Ultrawide via Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express dock: in my Windows gaming PC with a 3080 Ti connected through DisplayPort 1.4/HDMI 2.1, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 always falls short of its advertised 240Hz refresh rate.Depending on the resolution of your monitor, you will get different refresh rates available, I think because bandwidth is limited. My first try was using my Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express dock, it has a DisplayPort port on the back. The methods below works both on my Macbook Air M1 and Mac Studio M1. If you’re opting for USB-C, make sure you buy a high bandwidth USB-C cable rated for 8K. The only answer here is to use DisplayPort either through Thunderbolt or USB-C. Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 - Xiaomi 34” Ultrawide - first challenge is getting high refresh rate to work and then getting the resolution scaling right. What is the cheapest and straightforward solution to make 1440p monitors as HiDPI? This post answers that question. Out of the box, Apple Silicon Macs doesn’t rate these monitors as HiDPI, external monitors are rated as HiDPI if it’s at least a factor of 2x. I have 2 monitors and both of them are 1440p Ultrawide and 1440p Super Ultrawide. Boy this was a rabbit hole necessary for my eyes and their well being. ![]()

I’d happily recommend Tango Gameworks’ surprise rhythm action/hack-and-slash/platformer hybrid regardless of what you play it on: it’s a funny and satisfying brawler with some creative boss fights, and its final act kicks off with one of the single best combat encounters I’ve played in an action game. That chance becomes a certainty with its easygoing performance, allowing Medium quality to run at a nearly constant 60fps and High quality to rock n’ roll along at 45fps or more. Hi-Fi Rush is the kind of game that plays better on gamepad controls than a mouse and keyboard, so it always had the chance of being a great Steam Deck game. Being a rougelike – mostly – it wouldn’t normally be as suited for short bursts of portable play, say on a bus ride, but the Deck’s quick resume feature lets you take a break whenever and immediately hop back into a run. And it’s just as tense, inventive and witty on the Steam Deck: it runs at a perfect 60fps, and only needs the face buttons and a single thumbstick for its slick, combo-happy combat. Hades claimed, by Advent Calendar rules, RPS GOTY status back in 2020. It doesn’t suck (hahhhhhh) the battery too quickly either: although I haven’t done a full full-to-empty test yet, I’d say you can expect four to five hours of surviving vampires before the Deck runs dry. It only really needs the left thumbstick and an occasional face button for inputs, and the framerate keeps above 40fps even with the most overwhelming of monster crowds, so chalk Vampire Survivors up as another Steam Deck special. ![]() Simply moving around and auto-attacking sounds like a dreadfully dull premise but as the XP-unlocked weapon upgrades stack up, and the initial trickles of enemies become screen-filling bullet hell hordes, holding back the tide with time-stopping lasers and weaponised Bibles becomes almost hypnotically compelling. Especially if they’re already installed on your main PC, as this means you can use Steam’s recently added local transfers feature to potentially cut down on download times when installing those same games on your handheld. Since the Steam Deck is designed to play most, or at least a good chunk of the games you already own in your Steam library, you may well already have some of these ready to go. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() First, search our Salute emoji list and find the perfect emoji for your Discord server. The slight wrinkle here is that how many neurons a Hydra has is not fixed: it depends on the age of the creature, and ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand. They can reproduce asexually by budding which creates a clone, so you have a set of practically identical individuals to record from. ![]() And all while the creature was wriggling around under the microscope.Īlso useful about Hydra, parts three and four. So by watching their videos they could work out each neuron’s activity in each frame of the video just by recording how green it was. They engineered their Hydra so that the Hydras’ neurons expressed a protein that emits green light in proportion to how active a neuron is. The key then is to work out how to video not just the neurons, but the activity of those neurons.Ĭhristophe Dupre and Rafael Yuste did just that. That means we can video the neurons by simply videoing the animal (as we can see into the animal) and (as the neurons are all spread out) we can easily separate individual neurons when we analyse the video. And the other thing: it is completely see-through. But all we care about are whether it has neurons that link together and control the creature, which it does). (Technically, this is cheating as Hydra therefore has no “brain”, just a “nerve net”. For one, all its neurons are spread throughout its entire body, not irritatingly grouped into clusters like in C. ![]() Lone Justice were a next-big-thing that never really happened back in the 1980s. Lone Justice (w/ Bono) – Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground cover) A few years later, the American hardcore band Hüsker Dü played this cover of “Sweet Jane” live, in their trademark buzz saw style. In 1980, Gang of Four performed a metallic version of the song live, at a gig in San Francisco. The influence of the Velvet Underground on punk music has long been recognized, and it didn’t take long for punk bands to latch on to “Sweet Jane.” Eater, an early English punk band made up of teenagers of limited musical talent but limitless enthusiasm, released this loud, fast version on their debut album in 1978. Eater – Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground cover) This cover, recorded at the end of last August on a boat circling Manhattan, features Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh and a band that includes his sons Grahame and Brian they do a nice job recreating the Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal version, but somehow add a definite Dead twist. The live version of “Sweet Jane,” especially the introduction showcasing the interplay between guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner (who both also played with Alice Cooper… and Peter Gabriel) is thrilling. However, after the disappointing commercial response to his depressing Berlin album, Reed decided to release Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal, a live album featuring his touring band, most of whom were more influenced by hard rock than the moodier Velvet Underground sound. Reed continued to perform “Sweet Jane” after he left the Velvet Underground and embarked on his solo career. Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band – Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground cover) It joins the Hoople approach to the Reed vocals and makes for an interesting comparison to the Hunter-led version. Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople’s vocalist, did not share this admiration - he thought that the Velvet Underground “stunk,” and didn’t get along with Reed – but they recorded the song anyway, even though Hunter has been quoted as saying “it wasn’t us.” Their version is a somewhat cleaner, more straightforward rock version of the song, made better (as is anything in the world) with more cowbell.Īs a bonus, here is a recording from the All The Young Dudes recording sessions (produced by Bowie, while also co-producing Reed’s Transformer), with Reed singing a guide vocal. ![]() Bowie also suggested that they cover “Sweet Jane,” because of his admiration for Reed. Bowie handed them “All The Young Dudes” (after the band rejected “Suffragette City,” and Bowie denied them “Drive-In Saturday”) and produced their album, and instead of breaking up, the band became famous. The story of how Mott the Hoople was about to disband when David Bowie convinced them to give it another go is pretty well known. Mott the Hoople – Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground cover) Not when there are so many more little-known treasures out there. ![]() So we will not be presenting that cover – nor, for that matter, will you hear any of the various versions based around that cover. ![]() ![]() Probably the most famous version was released by the Cowboy Junkies based on a live version by the Velvets from 1969, it hit #5 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts, and Reed himself allegedly called it “the best and most authentic version I have ever heard.” Of course, artists don’t always properly appreciate their own music, and to these ears, the Cowboy Junkies turn the song into a lugubrious snoozefest. It should come as no surprise that “Sweet Jane” is also an oft-covered song – any bar band could play those three chords, and most of them did and do. And now, in honor of Reed’s passing earlier this week at the age of 71, the time has come to write about it here on Cover Me. According to Rolling Stone, it is the 335th greatest song of all time, which is curiously specific. What’s the appeal? Part of it, of course, is the riff (which apparently includes a “ secret chord”), part of it is the indescribable cool of Reed’s delivery, and part of it is that magic that makes some songs great and others not so much. Released on 1970’s Loaded, the Velvet Underground’s last studio album featuring Lou Reed, it immediately became a staple of FM radio, despite its odd and provocative lyrics, unusual structure, and unconventional sound, and it continues to get airplay to this day. ![]() |
